Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay topped among Indian institutes in the recently released QS Rankings for BRICS countries, ranking ninth. 

Top-ranked institute globally among BRICS countries is Tsinghua University in China, which has constantly found place in various QS Rankings, including QS World University rankings. 

The three other Indian institutes in the top 20 of BRICS QS Rankings this year are Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, IIT, Delhi and IIT, Madras. QS, regarded the most credible ranking for education institutions worldwide, was announced on Wednesday. 

IIT Bombay, Delhi and Madras had also found place in top 50 in the QS Asia rankings released last month. 

Other Indian institutes that figures in the BRICS Rankings are Delhi University and IIT, Roorkee. 

Talking about the position of Indian institutes in the QS Rankings, University Grants Commission chairman VS Chauhan said, “It is important for education institutions to collate what they are doing and an exercise like ranking makes sure that universities document their work. Our universities usually do a lot of good work but they so not document it.” 

Among private institutions, Birla Institute of Science and Technology (BITS), Pilani ranked 109 globally and number one in India.

The government has been trying to catapult Indian institutes to world rankings, for which they have decided to develop 20 institutes — 10 public and 10 private ones —as institutes of eminence, ones that can compete with top-rated global institutions.
