35% of India’s milk comes from Gujarat
State leads with 91.58 L kg of milk per day, way ahead of second placed Karnataka at 37.42 lakh kg.
With largest number of milk-producing members in the country, Gujarat has remained the top milk procuring state of India, once again.
In 2010-11, 91.58 lakh kg of milk per day was procured in Gujarat, which was 35% of country’s total milk procurement. A total of 2.61 crore kg per day of milk was procured in India in the year 2010-11.
The annual report of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for 2010-11 reveals that 96 lakh tonne of milk was collected in the year in India. Out of this, it is estimated that more than 33 lakh tonne of milk was collected in Gujarat alone.
In 2010-11, with 14,347 dairy cooperatives and 29.70 lakh producer members, the milk procurement in Gujarat has doubled in last decade. In 2000-01, the Gujarat procured 45.67 lakh kg of milk per day which has doubled in 2010-11.
As per the report, Gujarat leads in milk procurement, followed by Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and other states. There is huge difference between largest and second largest milk procuring state in the country. In 2010-11, Karnataka procured 37.42 lakh kg of milk per day, which is 40% of what Gujarat procured. Karnataka contributes 14% to country’s total milk procurement. Globally, India continued its dominance in the sector, with continuing to be the largest milk producing nation. The report envisages country’s estimated milk production for 2010-11 at 121 million tonne, close to 17% of world milk production.
