35 nominations for 13 seats

As many as 35 faculty members and principals of various colleges affiliated to Gujarat University (GU) have filed their nominations by the time of expiry of the deadline, to contest elections that will be held to throw up members to occupy the 13 seats on the university’s executive council.

GU is the state’s largest university, its executive council is widely referred to as syndicate, and the election is slated for September 30.

Figures shared by GU authorities stated that 10 candidates have also registered themselves to be considered for the three seats of board of accounts, elections for which are also slated for September 30. Officials at GU state that the nomination forms will be scrutinised in the coming days following which status of seats where candidates will be declared uncontested winners would be known.

“Around 400 forms were procured by interested candidates. At the end of the deadline, around 180 candidates desirous of contesting elections for the executive council and the board of accounts submitted them,” said an official. The issue of syndicate election had led to a ruckus as in charge vice chancellor Dr Mukul Shah did not announce election even as the term of the university body is set to end on August 30.

It was only after an HC order that Dr Adesh Pal declared that elections would be held on September 30.
