One of the prime witnesses of the CBI, AN Subramaniam, assistant vice-president of Reliance Capital had retracted from his earlier statement on Friday saying he could not recollect under whose advice he had issued a letter for opening an account with HDFC Bank for Swan Telecom.

Sethuraman also followed the line of Subramaniam who had in his statement before the CBI in March this year had clearly said he identified the signature of Hari Nair, Reliance executive and an accused in the scam but on Monday he told the Special CBI Judge OP Saini that “Signature appears to be of Hari Nair”, company secretary of M/s Swan Telecom Pvt Ltd.

Sethuraman’s evasive replies indicate that his statement won’t do any good to the CBI, which aims to establish the link between Reliance Telecom and Swan Telecom. Throughout recording of his statement, Sethuraman maintained he is the one who is heading the company’s Delhi’s operations and all the procedural and documentation is done by Mumbai office.

Sethuraman’s cross examination will continue on Tuesday as well as some of the lawyers of the accused sought time while former telecom minister A Raja refused to cross examine him. The court has also summoned Ashish Karyekar, GM of Reliance Infrastructure Limited on Tuesday.
