A local court today sentenced two persons to 13 years' rigorous imprisonment for carrying nearly 3 kgs of charas in a vehicle.

Special Judge Yogesh Jaswal also slapped fine of Rs 1,50,000 on each of the convicts -- Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Krishna, and Vipan Kumar of Deenanagar in Gurdaspur district of Punjab.

In case of default of payment, the convicts would undergo rigorous imprisonment for an additional year.

Public Prosecutor Anil Awasthi said that on January 11 last year, a police team had laid a 'naka' near Bhanjnu Mor in the district and recovered 2.9 kgs of charas from a vehicle.

A case under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against the duo at Kihar police station.

The vehicle used for transporting charas had also been confiscated.
