Officials today said that 19 Indian nationals have been arrested in the UK for working illegally and trafficking offences and one of them has been jailed for ten years for a major immigration scam.

The UK Border Agency enforcement operations took place between August 12 and September 13 as part of planned nationwide action to tackle illegal work, sham marriages, bogus colleges and organised immigration crime.

Sixteen migrants were arrested for working illegally at a catering firm in West London, a laundry in Hampshire and for a supplier to a racecourse in Merseyside.

Action is being taken to remove all Sixteen from the UK. The three businesses have been issued with warnings that they face up to £1,60,000 in fines for employing the workers, unless they can prove they carried out the correct right-to-work checks.

Damian Green, the UK immigration minister said, "The government has tasked the UK Border Agency with carrying out an intense period of enforcement activity over the summer. We are determined to make it harder than ever for illegal immigrants to come to the UK."

"Illegal immigration puts pressure on public services, local communities and legitimate businesses at a time when this country cannot afford it. That's why the UK Border Agency is working to cut illegal employment sham marriages, bogus colleges and organised smugglers being used by foreign national to try to stay in the UK illegally," added Green.

Three Indian men were arrested in Northamptonshire in connection with labour trafficking.

Two suspected trafficking victims - both Indian men - were working against their will and in harsh conditions and have been taken to a place of safety.

A UK Border Agency spokesperson said, "Human trafficking is a brutal form of organised crime and combating it is a key priority. Working with our law enforcement partners we are determined to create a hostile environment for those who prey on vulnerable immigrants and take action against them."

Further, three Indian nationals have received jail sentences for perpetrating an immigration scam in the UK with the aim of helping migrants evade immigration controls when they had no basis to remain in the UK.
