One of the major establishments to be razed to the ground was Udipi restaurant.

Several shops had extended their limits and had gone beyond the specified areas, leaving no room for parking vehicles.

A pan parlour, barber shop and others small shops were also demolished. Sources in the AMC said that a showcause notice had been given to the shops in the year 2007 and a final notice was given in 2008.

But soon, the shop owners approached the city civil court, which ruled in favour of the AMC.

Following this, the owners appealed in high court, where the HC ordered the AMC to carry on the demolition in February 2011.

However, even though the civic body had given time to the shop owners till March 4 they did not bother to vacate the encroached place.

A notice was also given on Thursday that demolition will be carried out and the shop owners were asked to take out their possessions.
