An Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) sweeper found two jars and informed activist Harshad Patel, who later called the police. The second jar contained preserved sperms. “Seven such incidents have been reported in the recent past from this area. I informed police about three of these incidents,” Patel said.

The foetuses are believed to be around three months old. AMC officials claim all are female foetuses, but police sources said the gender would be confirmed only after the post-mortem report was released. It was speculated that there were some male foetuses as well.

The source of the abandoned foetuses was not clear, but the police suspect it to be a gynaecology hospital close by that shut down three months back. A hospital that moved out of the area is also suspected to have dumped the foetuses.

On whether the foetuses were dumped after abortions, police inspector RD Lashkari said: “We have sent the foetuses for post-mortem. Only when the report arrives can anything be said.”

When contacted, deputy commissioner of police Ajay Kumar Chaudhary said: “As soon as the foetuses were found, they were sealed and sent to the civil hospital.” Officials also said that raids were being conducted at some hospitals suspected of dumping foetuses without going through proper procedure.

A team of the forensic science laboratory (FSL) reached Bapunagar. FSL sources said the foetuses appeared to have been preserved for a long time.
