Amid the hashtags #GoBackModi and #MaduraiThanksModi trending on Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday asked the people of Tamil Nadu to be wary about certain self-centred forces in the state that were trying to create suspicion and mistrust on the 10 per cent reservation brought by the centre for the poor in the general category.

Addressing his party’s rally, after laying the foundation stone of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences at Madurai, the Prime Minister who spoke in English said that the reservation for the poor was brought in such a way that it did not impact the already available reservation for the Dalits, tribals and other backward communities.

He said that any political concept that opposes the poor cannot benefit anyone. In Tamil Nadu, both the ruling AIADMK in the state and principal opposition party DMK opposed to the reservation on basis of economic criteria. Modi asserted that his government is taking effective steps to rid the country of corruption and nepotism.

“Any person who has cheated or looted the country shall be brought to justice. This is regardless of whether he is in India or abroad,” he said.

While targeting the Grand Alliance of opposition parties comprising of Congress and DMK, Modi said that the centre’s proactive efforts against corruption has created a stir from Chennai to Delhi.

“All those who were used to making deals in government contracts, defence deals and welfare schemes are now facing the music. That is why they are all coming together. These parties are keeping aside all other consideration and uniting to remove the “watchman”,” he asserted.

Stressing that opposition parties were uniting out of fear and negativity, Modi said he was not afraid of how big a group they form. “I will stand firmly with the poor. I call upon the people of Madurai and the youth of Tamil Nadu to reject these forces of negativity,” he said.

Modi dedicated most of his speech to explain projects and welfare schemes taken up in the state by his government. Though the Modi did not name any political party in his 21-minute long speech, his paying homage to the late chief minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa is a clear indication of the impending alliance for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.

In Madurai, various political parties and groups including MDMK chief Vaiko led a black flag protest against Modi for providing 10 per cent reservation for poor in upper castes. Modi’s brief stop in the temple town has created a stir in the social media with the BJP and supporters of DMK and its allies trending hashtags welcoming and opposing him.

BJP supporters were tweeting using the hashtags #MaduraiThanksModi and #TNWelcomesModi while those opposing his visit were using #GoBackModi and #GoBackSadistModi. Interestingly #GoBackModi trend worldwide in Twitter on Sunday afternoon.
