The incident happened late last night when trouble started brewing between two groups at Jagannath Ghosh Road and Baikuntha Ghosh Road within the limits of Kasba Police Station following an argument during the event there, they said.

Following the argument between the groups, one of which had organised the event, stones and glass bottles were pelted at each other leading to police intervention to bring the situation under control, a senior Kolkata Police officer said.

A police picket has been placed in the area following the arrest of ten persons who were booked under several sections of the IPC for rioting, armed with deadly weapons, unlawful assembly and others.

"It has been observed that attempts are being made by some to spread allegations that police had tortured women and damaged properties. But such allegations have no actual basis.

Police tried to control the crowd, but women in front were creating problems," the officer said.

According to police sources, women had gathered to witness the social event, when stones were thrown at them from behind leading to an argument followed by the clash.
