Ranu had been married to one Bablu Mondal in Mumbai. But after her husband died, she returned to Ranaghat in West Bengal where she made a living singing songs for the daily commuters and occasionally, performing on requests in various railway stations.

Ranu could effortlessly sing those songs which often proved to be difficult for even renowened singers to perform because of their difficult scale variation. In the video, it can be seen that she comfortably performed Lata Mangeshkar's song with no formal training. Ranu's is truly a born talent.
