More than 80 Delhi Police personnel were injured, some seriously, in violent clashes with groups of farmers who broke police barricades and stormed into the national capital Delhi on Republic Day. The injured police personnel have been admitted to several hospitals, including the trauma centre of the Civil Line Hospital in Delhi's North District and the Lok Nayak Hospital in central Delhi.

Police, who repeatedly appealed for calm and urged protesting farmers to stand down and return to the agreed routes, finally resorted to firing tear gas and lathi charges to regain control.

Farmers participating in a tractor rally clashed with the police at several places, including ITO junction where the Delhi Police HQ is located and stormed inside the iconic Red Fort, raised Sikh religious flags.

Shocking visuals from ITO, where the police headquarters is situated was even more disturbing. Policemen in riot gear appeared to be helpless as they were outnumbered by the protesting farmers, were seen running or hiding behind cars as farmers armed with sticks chased them ramming their tractors into the buses parked there.

Police and protesters also clashed at Nangloi, where more tear gas shells were fired.

One farmer died amid the clashes, after the tractor he was driving overturned near ITO. Other farmers alleged, however, that he died in police firing.

The two buses that were rammed had been used to block the farmers from progressing further on the crucial road connecting to the top government offices in the capital.

On the occasion of Republic Day 2021, the farmers were participating in the tractor rally against the new agriculture laws on Republic Day.
