Deoband Ulema Mufti Asad Kasmi sparked controversy over TMC MP Nusrat Jahan on sporting vermilion and mangalsutra inside Parliament during her oath ceremony. Kasmi said, “As per Islam, only a Muslim can marry a Muslim and nobody else whereas Jahan recently married a person named Nikhil Jain hailing from Jain community.” He also stated that religion has no importance in the life of actors and called such practices un-Islamic.

Saamana in its editorial has said, "Nusrat Jahan is Bengal's daughter, her feelings should be respected. Nusrat has married according to her own will, how is it going against any religion. How is it haraam if a Muslim girl marries a Hindu boy and wears mangalsutra and sindoor".

Saamana edit further goes on to say, " Generations of Muslims have been destroyed by those who give fatwa". According to Saamana, Muslims should be allowed to breathe free and live their lives. "Talibani rule has not started in India and no fatwa can stop the right to live freely in the country", said Saamana.

Saamana editorial ends saying, " Everyone has the right to propagate and practice their religion. Hindus and Muslims shouldn't be divided according to these rules. Sindoor in Nusrat's forehead is the testimony of the country's culture and the mangalsutra is her safety badge."

Taking jibe at the Muslim community, Saamana says, "This culture was behind getting rid of triple talaq culture. People who propagate such culture need not worry about Nusrat's sindoor."

Nusrat Jahan got married to businessman Nikhil Jain in Bodrum, Turkey last month. She had initially missed the oath taking ceremony in the Parliament. After she came back and took oath, controversy started over her attire with some hardliners giving strong reactions to it.

Mufti Mukarram Ahmed, Shahi Imam, Fatehpuri Masjid on Sunday said TMC MP Nusrat Jahan's marriage with a Jain businessman is not valid as per Islamic norms. This comes after a fatwa was issued to Jahan after she appeared in Parliament wearing 'sindoor'.Speaking to ANI, Mukarram said, "I don't know what is mentioned in the fatwa, but Islam does not allow 'Sindoor'. It's not Muslim culture... It's not a marriage. It looks more like a relation to show off. Both Muslims and Jains won't consider it a marriage. She is no more a Jain or a Muslim. She has done a big crime and she should not have done it."The newly-elected TMC MP's marriage with a Jain businessman and her wearing a sindoor and bangles became a subject matter of controversy on Saturday, with a Muslim cleric calling out Jahan over "un-Islamic" practices."Islam says a Muslim can marry only a Muslim. I have got to know that Nusrat is a film actor and people in the cinema do not care about religious practices. They do what they have to," said Mufti Asad Quasmi of Madrasa Jamia Sheikh-ul-Hind.- ANI

In her post, she clarified that she is a Muslim.

Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development Debashree Chowdhury on Sunday said no one can issue a fatwa against an MP."As an Indian citizen, Nusrat has the right to do what she desires. This is not Pakistan, you can not issue a Fatwah against a Member of Parliament," said Chowdhury.- ANI
