A six-member Special Investigative Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the alleged murder case of the 2.5-year-old victim in Aligarh's Tappal. A case has also been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The mutilated body of the minor victim, who reportedly went missing from Tappal township on May 31, was found in a garbage dump on June 2.  Two persons have been arrested in connection with the crime so far. The family has confirmed a fallout over a monetary dispute of Rs 10000, said the police.

The post-mortem report states that the victim was brutally beaten to death. The minor was repeatedly hit on the chest which led to a fracture in all the ribs, the left leg, and severe head injuries. The report adds that the right arm was chopped off from the shoulder and the body was eaten up by insects to such an extent that bones were exposed at certain places.

Five policemen, including an SHO, have been suspended for alleged negligence, five days after the mutilated body of a three-year-old girl was found in a garbage dump in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, triggering a huge public outcry over the brutality of the crime.

The policemen were suspended for alleged delay in registering the case after the girl was reported missing, and also for delaying the probe which eventually led to the discovery of her body on June 2, officials said.

The toddler had gone missing from Tappal township on May 30. Her body was found three days later in a garbage dump near her house.

"Post-mortem examination has not found any sign of sexual assault. The report confirmed death due to strangulation," police said.

On June 2, locals had spotted stray dogs dragging a garbage bag which contained her body parts. The body was identified and the accused had abducted and strangled her. While sexual assault was ruled out, the body’s arm and leg were broken.

Aligarh Senior Superintendent of Police Akash Kulhari said there is no evidence of sexual assault.

To a specific question, he said no Protection of Children from Sexual Offences charge has been added so far.

Kulhari said vaginal swab and slides have been sent for FSL examination. "Depending on the report, if it is established that sexual offence took place, a decision on (adding) POCSO Act will be taken," he said.

The girl's father, Banwarilal Sharma, had threatened to go on fast unto death, demanding the arrest of the accused's family members who, he said, "colluded" in the crime. The SSP met him and persuaded him against sitting on fast.

The SSP said he has assured Sharma that justice would be done in the case and the accused would be tried in a fast- track court.

Meanwhile her mother said: "I request Modi Government & Yogi Government to severely punish the accused. We want death penalty for him. Otherwise if he comes out after 7 years, he will be emboldened even more. "

Proceedings have begun to charge the duo under the National Security Act, Kulhari has said.

A six-member SIT has been formed to investigate the case and a female inspector had been appointed to carry forward the probe, he said.
