'Chennai vision start of a new era in India-China relations,' says PM Modi

Today's meeting will focus on international and regional issues.

PM Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping at Taj Fisherman's Cove hotel in Tamil Nadu's Kovalam, on day of the 2nd informal summit between the two leaders.

Today's meeting will focus on international and regional issues, announced Foreign Secretary Vijay K Gokhale and the two sides will also issue separate statements of the outcomes of the two-day informal summit between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi.

The focus of the meeting is likely to find ways to improve people-to-people contact, enhance trade and on how to maintain peace and tranquillity along the 3,500-kilometre long India-China border.

Earlier on Friday, PM Modi received Chinese President Xi Jinping in Mamallapuram where he took him to tour to iconic monuments, ancient temples. The two leaders indulged in informal talks which lasted for several hours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted the invitation of President Xi Jinping to visit China for a third informal summit next year. President Xi extended the invitation during the second informal summit in Mamallapuram of Tamil Nadu.

 

Addressing the media after the summit, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on Saturday said, "Prime Minister Modi and President Xi also appraised the practice of Informal Summits in a positive light as providing an important opportunity to deepen dialogue and to promote mutual understanding at the Leaders' level in line with the 'Wuhan Spirit' and the 'Chennai Connect'."

 

"They agreed to continue this practice in the future. President Xi invited Prime Minister Modi to visit China for the 3rd Informal Summit. Prime Minister Modi has accepted the invitation," he added.

 

The dates and location of the summit are yet to be decided.

 

During the second summit, both leaders held "heart-to-heart" and "candid discussions like friends" on a series of issues.

On Friday, Xi and Modi spend five hours of "quality time" and held discussions on a wide range of issues including the unbalanced trade that exists between the two countries and ways to counter radicalisation and terrorism.

 

Prime Minister Modi took the visiting Chinese dignitary to three iconic monuments - Arjuna's Penance, Krishna's Butter Ball and the Shore Temple in Mamallapuram- before settling down for a colourful performance.

 

During the tour, Modi also gave a guided tour of the monuments to Xi.

 

The two leaders enjoyed a thrilling cultural performance at Shore Temple's complex in the evening. The programme showcased the Indian classical dance forms of Kathakali and Bharatnatyam to fast-paced Carnatic music, highlighting the region's magnificent roots.
