1.Bavaliya wins by over 19,900 votes
The constituency has 2.32 lakh registered voters -- 1.22 lakh men and 1.09 lakh women. Gujarat minister Kunvarji Bavaliya secured over 90,000 votes against Congress' Kunvarji Bavaliya who received just more than 70,000 votes.
BJP- 90,262, Congress- 70,283
2.A turncoat and his former aide
The election became necessary after Kunvarji Bavaliya, an influential Koli community leader who had won the seat on Congress ticket in 2017, joined the BJP and resigned as MLA on July 2 and was made a cabinet minister in the BJP government in the state on the same day. Bavaliya had won the seat on Congress ticket in 1995, 1998, 2002, 2007 and 2017. The saffron party fielded him for the by-election. He had to get elected back to the Assembly within six months to continue as minister. He was pitted against Congress' Avsar Nakiya, a Rajkot district panchayat member who once worked with Bavaliya. Apart from Bavaliya and Nakiya, six other candidates are in the fray.
3.Congress bastion
Since the formation of Gujarat in 1960, the BJP has won this seat only once - in the by-election held in 2009 when Bavaliya vacated the seat after being elected to Lok Sabha from Rajkot. Apart from Bavaliya and Nakiya, six other candidates are also in the fray.
4.Vijay Rupani absent from campaign, wife Anjali seeks votes for Bavaliya
The BJP organised a 36km-long motorbike rally, led by its state president Jitu Vaghani, on the last day of canvassing. Bavaliya is a prominent Koli leader and is banking on support from his community, which has a large presence in the constituency, to get re-elected. The ruling party organised rallies and door-to-door campaigns in support of Bavaliya with Vaghani leading from the front in canvassing. While Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was conspicuous by his absence on the campaign trail, his wife Anjali Rupani sought votes for Bavaliya.

5.Congress pulls out all the stops
Senior state Congress leaders and party's Gujarat in- charge Rajeev Satav besides a host of MLAs campaigned for Nakiya. The opposition party also brought in Punjab Cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu as its star campaigner to address a gathering moments before the campaign ended at 5 pm on Tuesday.
