Despite positioning herself as a champion of free speech, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has always taken a dim view of satire and dissent. We got a timely reminder ahead of the sixth phase of elections in West Bengal when a BJP Bengal youth leader was arrested for sharing a meme mocking Mamata Banerjee. She was arrested and presented in Howrah Court.

A BJP Bengal youth leader – Priyanka Sharma – was arrested by the Howrah Cyber Crime Branch. She had posted the meme on Facebook. Sharma appears to be a convener of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Howrah.
TMC leaders said that that sharing the CM’s photoshopped pics was a grave crime and it was insulting the CM of the state. TMC leader Vibhas Hazra had filed a complaint against Priyanka Sharma.
This isn’t the first time Mamata – who has shown her proclivity for the arts and is a prolific writer and painter – has taken umbrage with satire mocking her. In 2012, a Jadavpur University professor – Amibkesh Mahapatra – was arrested for sharing cartoons mocking the chief minister.
