1.India signs US $5 billion deal to buy 5 S-400 air defence system
India and Russia signed the US $5 billion S-400 air defence system deal on Friday after wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi on October 5.
2.Russia's most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system
S-400 is known as Russia's most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system. China was the first foreign buyer to seal a government-to-government deal with Russia in 2014 to procure the lethal missile system and Moscow has already started delivery of an undisclosed number of the S-400 missile systems to Beijing. 3.India's air defence against China
India wants to procure the long-range missile systems to tighten its air defence mechanism, particularly along the nearly 4,000. Russia has been one of India's key suppliers of arms and ammunition. More than 80% of India’s military equipment was of Soviet origin during the days of the Cold War, but since its breakup, New Delhi has diversified its weaponry.

4.Serving Russia since 2007
The S-400 is an upgraded version of the S-300 systems. The missile system, manufactured by Almaz-Antey, has been in service in Russia since 2007. Several countries have shown interest in the S-400, which is considered better the American THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system. Although both are different weapon systems.

5.Range of up to 400 km
The mobile S-400 batteries, which include radars, a control system, and missiles with a range of up to 250 miles (402 km), was first deployed in Russia in 2007 and is considered Moscow's most effective defence against aircraft, missiles and drones.

6.Can target American F-35s
According to Army Technology, a site for for defence tech, the S-400 Trimuf system can engage all types of aerial targets including aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and ballistic and cruise missiles within the range of 400km, at an altitude of up to 30km. The system can simultaneously engage 36 targets. It can track 100 airborne targets, including super fighters such as the American built F-35.

7.Can be deployed within five minutes
The S-400 Trimuf is two-times more effective than previous Russian air defence systems and can be deployed within five minutes. It can also be integrated into the existing and future air defence units of the Air Force, Army, and the Navy.

8.US threatens sanctions
The US on Wednesday urged its allies not to enter into transactions with Russia and warned that it would trigger American sanctions. "We urge all of our allies and partners to forgo transactions with Russia that would trigger sanctions under CAATSA," a State Department Spokesperson told PTI when asked about India's plan to purchase multi-billion S-400 missile defense system from Russia.

9.Deployed in Syria
Russia has deployed S-400s in Syria, according to official Russian news media, and US officials have been discussing the interest other nations, particularly NATO ally Turkey, have expressed in buying the system. Washington has expressed concern that Turkey's planned deployment of S-400s could threaten some US-made weapons and other technology used by Turkey, including the F-35 fighter jet.
