The nation paid homage to freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his 108th birth anniversary today. A number of functions have been organised across the country to mark the occasion.
1. Bhagat Singh in his younger days
Bhagat Singh was born in a Punjabi Sikh family in September 1907 at Banga village in Lyallpur district to Kishan Singh and Vidyavati.

Bhagat Singh joined the National College in Lahore in 1923, founded and run by Lala Lajpat Rai, and devoted himself whole-heartedly to the study of history, politics and economics.

3. Bhagat Singh at Lahore Railway Police Station
Bhagat Singh was arrested in connection with a bomb explosion at Lahore during Dussehra in 1927, and was imprisoned in Lahore Railway police station.

In his early childhood days, Bhagat Singh was inspired with his family's spirit of patriotism and soon joined Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement.

5. Bhagat Singh's killing of John Saunders
Although Bhagat Singh was born into a Sikh family, he shaved his beard off to escape detection in 1929 after the killing of John Saunders, an Assistant Superintendent of Police.

6. Bhagat Singh's death
Bhagat Singh was only 23 years old, when he was sentenced to death in the Lahore conspiracy case and hanged on 23rd March, 1931 in Lahore jail.
