The number of confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in India crossed 3,300 on Sunday with recorded 75 deaths, the government data said on Saturday. 

As per data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 266 people have been cured of the disease and discharged.

With 490 cases and 24 deaths, Maharashtra is the most affected state in the country, followed by Delhi (445 cases, 6 deaths), Tamil Nadu (485 cases, 3 deaths), Kerala (306 cases, 2 deaths) and Uttar Pradesh (227 cases, 2 deaths), according to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The data released by the Maharashtra government, however, put the number of affected people at 636. As many as 145 persons were confirmed to have coronavirus infection in Maharashtra on Saturday, an official statement said.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued fresh guidelines for setting up of coronavirus testing laboratories as the number of cases rises across the country.

 

The ICMR has approved the COVID-19 testing in more than 200 laboratories across the country. Based on the new requests from several districts of India for initiation of COVID-19 testing, ICMR said it has formulated the new guidelines for the establishment of a new testing laboratory in any district. The council said the number of suspected cases in that particular district should be more than 100 per day and the nearest testing laboratory must be at least 250 km (4-5 hrs @ 60 Km/hr) for plain areas and 150 km (5 hrs @ 30Km/hr) for hilly areas.

The number of coronavirus cases worldwide has crossed 12 lakh with close to 65,000 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker. The tracker recorded total confirmed 1,201,591 cases worldwide and 64,703 deaths as of 7:30 am (IST) on Saturday.

 

Out of the 12 lakh COVID-19 patients, 246,198 have recovered from the disease. The global coronavirus cases had crossed 1 million-mark on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday addressed the nation through a video message, in which he appealed to the citizens of India to come together to defeat the threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis, that is spreading like wildfire across the nation.

 

In a unique proposition, the Prime Minister asked every citizen to switch off all lights at their residences on April 5 at 9 PM for nine minutes and instead light a candle, a 'Diya', or their mobile's flashlights to mark India's fight against coronavirus. The purpose of this exercise, Modi said, is to bolster confidence in the heart of the citizens with a realisation of the fact that no one is alone in this crisis, they are in this with 130-crore other Indians who are collectively battling this crisis.

 

"Today when crores of people are inside their homes, some of us might wonder how we will fight this battle against COVID-19 all alone. Such questions might come up in your mind. But please remember, none of us are alone. The strength of 130 crore Indians is with each one of us," said Prime Minister Modi.
