The Kerala government has declared a holiday in five districts as the state remains on high alert with heavy rains expected when Cyclone Burevi makes landfall.
Heavy rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry under the influence of the cyclone. Authorities deployed NDRF teams and set up relief camps as disaster-response measures in view of the storm's impending landfall.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu till Saturday. Also Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram districts of Kerala is likely to receive very heavy rainfall.
Operations at Trivandrum International Airport to resume from 4 pm on Friday following the latest weather forecast. Flight operations in three airports in Tamil Nadu and Kerala had been suspended as a precautionary measure.
'Fishermen are advised not to venture into Gulf of Mannar & adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and along & off south Tamilnadu coast, north Sri Lanka and south Kerala coasts and LakshadweepMaldives area and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea during next 24 hours,' IMD said in a tweet.
