Bangladeshi cattle smugglers maim BSF constable Anisur Rehman with crude bomb, jawan loses right arm

The incident occured in the intervening night between July 10 and July 11.

In a shocking incident, a BSF jawan was grievously injured by cattle smugglers who lobbed crude bombs at him.

The incident occurred on the intervening night of July 10 and July 11, around 3:30 AM in the morning. A group of 25 smugglers made a forcible attempt to smuggle 10-15 cattle into Bangladesh through Angrail near Bangaon, 24 Parganas (North).

The smugglers were armed to the teeth with country-made bombs, dahas, hasia, sticks and high-beam torches. The vigilant BSF troops intercepted and them as they looked to take cattle into Bangladesh with the support of Indian accomplices, said the agency.

When intercepted by BSF troops on the International Boundary, the smugglers encircled BSF constable Anisur Rehman and lobbed a powerful country-made bomb towards him which exploded nearby.

Constable Rehman, the agency said, displayed the highest level of valour and conviction towards his duty to not allow the smugglers to escape and fired at them with his non-lethal PAG gun.

Subsequently, the smugglers lobbed another country-made bomb towards him which exploded near his right hand. A bicycle nearby was also damaged and many pellets pierced Constable Rehman’s body.

During the incident, BSF troops from nearby ambushes rushed to the spot and found their comrade unconscious and grievously wounded. The smugglers managed to escape but left the cattle behind.

Constable Anisur Rahman was immediately evacuated to Government Hospital Bangaon and was then shifted for specialised treatment to Medica Hospital, Kolkata. Unfortunately, his right hand had to be amputated. One Bangladeshi smuggler also sustained injuries while he fled, reports suggested.

Inspector General, South Bengal Frontier Y B Khurania took a very serious view of the incident and has directed all field formations under his command to keep adopting aggressive postures against trans-border criminals and those active on the Indo-Bangladesh Border.

BSF is also lodging a strong protest with their counterparts in the Border Guards Bangladesh to rein in the trans-border criminals.
