Vajpayee, famous for his political acumen and brilliant oratory skills, was also an ardent sports lover. He was also a big advocate of peace with Pakistan during his prime ministership. The 93-year-old Vajpayee was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on June 11 with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion.

He was in critical condition for the last few days and continued to be on advanced life-support system. People from all walks of life prayed for his health, while special prayers were held in his 'karam bhoomi' Lucknow after the news spread that the veteran leader's health has deteriorated.  

The former prime minister was born on December 25, 1924, in a middle-class Brahmin family of Shri Krishna Bihari Vajpayee and Smt. Krishna Devi at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.

President Ram Nath Kovind, PM Narendera Modi led the nation in paying tribute to Atal Bihar Vajpayee.
