Alwar: Pehlu Khan, lynched to death by cow vigilantes in 2017, now chargesheeted by Rajasthan police

The incident had occurred in the Behror area of Rajasthan on April 1, 2017 when Pehlu Khan and his son Irshad were heading home with two cows that they had purchased from Jaipur.

Rajasthan Police has filed a chargesheet against Pehlu Khan, who was beaten to death by mob in Alwar in 2017 while he was transporting cattle. The chargesheet also names his elder son Irshad.

The chargesheet accuses Pehlu Khan under sections 5, 8 and 9 of the Rajasthan Bovine Animal (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 1995 and Rules, 1995.

Pehlu Khan a resident of Nuh, Haryana, had died after being assaulted by cow vigilantes.

The incident had occurred in the Behror area of Rajasthan on April 1, 2017 when Pehlu Khan and his son Irshad were heading home with two cows that they had purchased from Jaipur. 

The assault was recorded on mobile cameras and created huge uproar across the country. The incident had also raised allegations against the local police and family of the victim has been demanding to shift the case to Alwar city.

Speaking to an English daily, Pehlu Khan's elder son Irshad who name is also there in the chargesheet, said that he lost his father in the incident by cow vigilantes and now they (police) has charged them as cow smugglers.

 

Irshad, who is 25 years old, said that they were hoping for justice after the Congress government came to power in Rajasthan. He hoped that the case would be reviewed and withdrawn, but now they have filed a case chargesheet against us.

 

"We were hoping for justice but this didn't happen," Irshad said.

Earlier in September 2018, Key witnesses in Pehlu Khan mob lynching case were allegedly shot while they were heading to a court in Alwar.

 

Pehlu Khan’s son Irshad, along with a lawyer and a human right activist, was heading to a court in Behror, Alwar, for hearing in the case when they were reportedly shot at by unidentified men in a SUV without number plates.

However, a month later in October 2018,  the Rajasthan Police claimed they had found no evidence of firing on the witnesses of the Pehlu Khan lynching case and termed the complaint fake.

 

"No firing on the witnesses took place and the complaint was fake. There was no circumstantial evidence of firing and no such vehicle, as described by the complainant, is seen in CCTV footage," Circle Officer Behror Kushal Singh said.

 

"The complaint was posted on social media about the alleged incident but they did not inform the police control room. They went to the SP office instead of approaching a nearby police station which had raised doubts," he said.
