In wake of Pongal festival, the Tamil Nadu state government has decided to give Rs 2500 cash to over 2.6 crore ration cardholders in the state. The amount will be distributed from January 4 so that everyone can celebrate the harvest festival happily.

Additionally, under this package, the government will also give one kg of rice, sugar, raisins, cashew, cardamom, a cloth bag and a cane to the ration card holders free of cost. Last year also, the Tamil Nadu government had given Rs 1000 to the ration cardholders to buy rice and this year it has been increased by Rs 1500 to Rs 2500. The festival of Pongal falls on January 14.

The AIADMK government started giving Rs 100 to the people of the state in 2014 along with 1 kg rice and 1 kg sugar. In 2018, this amount was increased to Rs 1000 and now Chief Minister Palaniswami has increased it to Rs 2,500.

On the other hand, Opposition leader MK Stalin has questioned Chief Minister Palaniswami's decision. He said that "when people were facing problems, no financial relief was given. But now as the election draws near, the Chief Minister has announced to give Rs 2,500. At least now he should give Rs 5,000 to those who are suffering due to the pandemic the monsoon rains."

However, the Chief Minister has denied these allegations of the opposition leader.

Preparations for the elections in Tamil Nadu have been intensified. It is worth noting that the 2021 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu will be held in completely new circumstances. Both the state's influential parties AIADMK and DMK will go to the polls without their miraculous leaders Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi. The DMK had considerable success in the Lok Sabha elections, but the real test of its leader Stalin will be only in 2021.

The AIADMK, on the other hand, is weak due to being divided among different factions despite being in power. If the ruling faction and the faction led by Dinakaran come together, it can emerge strong.
