The three facilities are frontrunners in the development of an eagerly-awaited vaccine for COVID-19 in India.

"As India enters a decisive phase of the fight against COVID-19, PM Narendra Modi’s visit to these facilities & discussions with the scientists will help him get a first-hand perspective of the preparations, challenges & roadmap in India’s endeavour to vaccinate its citizens," said the PMO.

The prime minister's visit to the three facilities is aimed at reviewing the status of COVID-19 vaccine development and discuss modalities of launch, production, and distribution with the scientists.

According to the PTI, PM Modi would first visit pharmaceutical major Zydus Cadila's plant at around 9:30 am. The plant is located 20 km away from Ahmedabad in the Changodar industrial area.

After Ahmedabad, PM Modi will visit the Serum Institute of India in Pune at around 12:30 pm. The SII has partnered with the Oxford University and global pharma giant AstraZeneca to conduct trials for its vaccine candidate.

Finally, PM Modi will head over to Hyderabad where he will visit the facility of Bharat Biotech, the PTI quoted an official as saying.

After landing at the Hakimpet Air Force station, PM Modi will visit the facility at Genome Valley, which is around 50 km away from Hyderabad. Bharat Biotech's Covaxin is under Phase-III trials right now.

The PM will fly back to New Delhi after he visits the three facilities, the officer told PTI.
