Farmers Protest: BKU leaders call off their protest, Chilla border to remain shut

Even as the farmers' agitation entered the 20th day, some farmer unions have come out in support of the Central farm laws. These farmers met the Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and extended their support to the new farm laws.

Indian Farmer's Union leaders met the Agriculture Minister and urged him not to repeal the farm laws. On the other hand, the farmers at the Singhu border have announced to intensify the movement and have made further strategies.

'Farm laws not to be repealed'

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the leaders of the Bharatiya Kisan Union met him at the Krishi Bhavan and expressed their strong support to these laws.

He said that a great work has been done under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The farmers have fully supported the new law. Previously, the farmers' organisations of Haryana met the Agriculture Minister and handed over letters in support of the new law. The government says that the law is in the interest of the farmers.

'Farmers are getting benefit'

Speaking at the Agro-Food Processing Summit, organised virtually through the AgroVision Foundation, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the benefits of reforms introduced in the agriculture sector through the new laws implemented by the Central government have started reaching the farmers of the country.

Regarding the farmers' movement, the Union Agriculture Minister said, "Some farmers' organizations are carrying out the movement, who are being explained the benefits that the farmers would get. In the coming years, the agricultural world will get a lot of benefit from these reforms and they will prove to be highly beneficial for the farmers."

'Chilla border closed'

On the other hand, farmers stand their grounds on all the borders of NCR. They are not ready to back down from their demands, the farmers are constantly demanding that the government withdraw the laws. The 5-6 rounds of talks between the farmers and the government have failed to reach any conclusion. The farmers have also returned the government's written proposal.

After the Bharat Bandh, on December 14 the farmers held a nationwide demonstration. Now the farmers have announced to completely close down the Chilla border. Uttar Pradesh Farmers Union has announced to completely close the Chilla Border on December 16. 

13-14 Farmers 'Martyrs'!

On Tuesday, many farmer organisations met at the Singhu border in Delhi. During the meeting, farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dhallewala told that two meetings were held at Punjab and national level. In these meetings, tribute was paid to the peasant brothers who were 'martyred' during the movement.

He claimed that everyday a farmer is getting 'martyred' and that till now 13-14 farmers have already attained 'martyrdom'.

What are demands

The leaders of farmer organisations are demanding the repeal of the three new farm laws implemented by the Central government, including the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act 2020, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Agreement Act 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Law 2020 is included. However, the list of farmers' demands is long.

Leaders of farmer organisations are also demanding a new law to guarantee the purchase of all notified crops at the minimum support price (MSP), whereas the government has given written assurance to continue the current system of procurement of crops on the MSP.

In addition to this, his demands include the abolition of provisions for stricter penalties and fines in the ordinance related to stubble burning and the withdrawal of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill.
