Stability of the Indian Ocean remains the key focus when it comes to India-Maldives defence ties, said Chief of Defence Force of the Republic of Maldives Major General Abdulla Shamaal, while speaking with WION's Principal Diplomatic Correspondent.
I feel the Indo-Pacific concept at large is a geopolitical construct where the smaller nations or littoral countries of the Indian Ocean region can leverage on the economic benefits of the construct. The overall idea has been there for a while. It is becoming much more intense. I am sure the smaller countries in the region can reap great benefits.
The defence cooperation relationship is a salient feature. It is a co-component of Indo-Maldivian relations. And when we look at India Maldives defence relations, it is a multi-faceted cooperation, which involves capacity-building of the Maldivian armed forces, provision of training, exchange of high-level visits and even military exercises. The main focus is the greater Indian Ocean region. Stability, protection and safety of the Indian Ocean are of prime importance for India and Maldives. Both our countries share value when it comes to the protection of Indian Ocean.
I don't think so. In fact, in the discussions, China was not mentioned. We have exclusively focused on Indo-Maldives ties.
