On December 5, three boys – our neighbour and his friends – passed lewd comments on my sister. Though she warned them that she would complain to our father, they followed her to our home.

My father came out and told them politely not to pass comments. But they slapped and hit him. They misbehaved with my sister and tore her clothes. One of the boys threw a stone at my father, which hit his hand. In the melee, our neighbour also got injured.

Though a lot of people were around, only one came forward to help as others knew the boy’s family had a criminal record.

My father went to the Bhandup police station immediately to register an FIR, but, only a non cognisable offence case was registered. On our insistence, the police officer sent a constable to our home.

After two hours, when the police called our neighbours to the station, the boy claimed my father hit him with a stick. Following a complaint from my neighbours, the police registered an FIR against my father.

After getting bail, my father and my sister met the zonal DCP & Bhandup ACP on December 7, and filed a complaint. The police promised action, but nothing happened. Meanwhile, the boy threatened my sister with filing a counter complaint.

The Bhandup ACP told a junior to look into the issue, but the only thing the latter did was to catch the boy on December 10 and warn him. Meanwhile, a local contractor, who is a friend of the boy’s family, threatened my sister with dire consequences.

When my father met the ACP  again, the ACP said,”We will take action, do not worry. Give your statement”. Then my father and my sister gave a statement to a junior officer.

Finally, on December 27, we sent an application to the chief minister’s office and the Mumbai police commissioner’s office. However, no action has been taken and the police have not registered an FIR.

In the meantime, due to mental and social harassment, my sister tried to commit suicide. My father saw her and stopped her then, but how many times will he stop her?Identity of the DNA reader has been withheld
