The verification should have been done by another set of designated employees.
The NRC has been executed based on the 2011 census and not based on Assam’s current population. Since 2011, the population must have gone up from 3.3 crore to approximately 3.8 crore. This includes immigrants that have come after 2011. In addition, lakhs of people, out of the fear of being detected, did not apply for the NRC. In due course, they will resurface and get themselves registered as voters. The whole exercise will eventually be pointless. In addition, the designated employees of the whole NRC process, who inserted the names of people in the register, also verified the same names. This obviously created a conflict of interest. The verification should have been done by another set of designated employees. For example, the names inserted in Guwahati should have been verified by employees designated in Dibrugarh.
