It's not every day that you get to be part of a film franchise that has the world talking about it, loving it and even to some extent going obsessive about it. And when you do, that too for over a decade, you walk out of it with inspiration, ample experiences, high hopes and aspirations and the popularity and power to make something similar happen.

Yes, we are talking about Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr, who played Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has recently expressed his wish to launch a similar franchise with Sherlock Holmes.

Downey Jr, 55, has earlier played the legendary detective in Guy Ritchie-helmed films Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2009 film and 2011 respectively.

And now with the next one being planned where Downey will reprise the role for the third film alongside Jude Law in the franchise in 2021, to be helmed by Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman), he wishes to put to use what he has learned during his time at Marvel and grow another franchise since he sees a lot of potential in it and turn it into a 'mystery-verse'.

According to media reports, speaking at Fast Company's Innovation Festival, Downey Jr explained, "At this point, we really feel there's not a mystery-verse built out anywhere, and Conan Doyle is the definitive voice in that arena to this day, so to me, why do a third movie if you're not going to be able to spin off into some real gems of diversity, and other times and elements?

"We're not repeaters, we don't want to just try to do what's been done somewhere else. But I think the model itself has become much more dimensionalised than it was before," he added.

However, his wife and producing partner Susan Downey certainly feels that the franchise could be expanded further.

She said, "Doing a one-off third movie, we could do, but we do think there's opportunity to build it out more, to spin off some characters from the third movie, to see what's going on in the television landscape, to see how Warner Media is starting to build things out with HBO and HBOMax.

"We definitely have kind of grand schemes and plans and all that, but it takes a lot. It takes a lot of coordination because again, Marvel wasn't built in a day. It took several wins and things that worked very well to then be able to connect them, to then be able to branch out."

This comes at a time when Netflix recently released Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown. The story is about the teenage sister of the already-famous Sherlock Holmes, who goes to London in search of her mother who has disappeared.
