'Psycho' to 'Gone Girl,' 10 psychological crime thrillers that will make you question sanity

Starring actor Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, the movie Gone Girl is all forms of crazy following the story of a husband who comes under media scrutiny after his wife goes missing. The movie takes a complete turn when the missing wife is murdered which makes the husband a prime suspect.

The movie went on to become a blockbuster hit bagging multiple awards.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, Insomnia follows the story of a detective sent to a small town in Alaska to investigate the murder of a teenage girl. During the course of the investigation, all hell breaks loose for detective Will Dormer. The investigation ends up being in a cat and mouse chase with the murderer of the case. Insomnia is one of Robin Williams' stellar performances.

Memento is another one of Christopher Nolan’s beautiful works. The neo-noir psychological thriller film goes back and forth in time centring the story around Leonard an ex-insurance investigator who suffers from amnesia and goes in search to find the murderer of his wife which is the last thing he remembers. As the story proceeds, there is a shift in time that unfolds the past revealing greater secrets which further builds walls in this maze of surprises and shock.

Serial killers are easy plot points when it comes to making a thriller film, trying to understand their mind and the reasons they do things have been topic of fascination with many writers. Mr Brooks covers that. The movie tells the story of Earl Brooks, a famous businessman with an alter-ego Marshall who is a serial killer. His life turns upside down when a very driven police officer Detective Tracy Atwood reopens the investigation to his murders.

A classic by Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho is set in 1960. The movie has the power to enthral and shock the audience even today with its bold and rather scary storyline paired with an amazing star cast gives an enigmatic experience. Based on the book of the same name, Psycho circles around Marion Crane after she disappears having embezzled money from her employer. Gone in search of Marion, her sister Lila Crane and her lover end up at the infamous Bates Motel where they come face to face with Norman Bates and the story from then on turns hellish.

Directed by David Fincher, the movie is a dark and gripping tale of sociopathic serial killer John Doe. He kills people as an absolution for their ignorance of the seven deadly sins. Played by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, two detectives go on an extensive hunt to find this killer and put an end to all the crimes. The movie definitely promises the biggest story build up which will send through shock waves towards the end.

This intense psychological thriller stars our Leonardo DiCaprio in a  gritty role as Teddy Daniels. Daniels is a US Marshall who is sent to an Asylum on a remote island along with his colleague Chuck Aule (played by Mark Ruffalo) to investigate the disappearance of a patient. But in doing so they face with a rather unsettling and horrifying truth about the place that makes Teddy question everything including his own sanity. Another one of Director Martin Scorsese's fantastic works.

The spine-chilling storyline and the brilliant acting of the award-winning lead Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins makes Silence of the Lambs a classic thriller. This movie has the ability to get under your skin as it takes you on an unnerving journey to the very centre of a serial killer’s mind. The story follows the interaction between FBI agent Clarice Starling seeking help from Hannibal Lecter, a psychopathic serial killer and former psychiatrist soon turning into a twisted game with an unsettling conclusion.

Directed by David Fincher, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a psychological crime thriller with an amazing storyline that will stun you from the very beginning. Starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the movie follows the story of detective Mikael who hires a computer hacker to find and a woman gone missing for forty years. However, the search doesn’t go as planned when these two end up discovering more than what they bargained for.

While one identifies the Snowman as an affable ice sculpture you make during winter, this movie will change that meaning for you! Using the snowman as his call out name during his signature crimes, a serial killer is out in the open and Detective Harry Hole played by Michael Fassbender must investigate these murders and solve the case before it is too late.
