Getting to play a superhero in massive budget Hollywood films is a dream come true and for most, getting to play the role of a lifetime more than once is being lucky as hell. However, it’s quite a difficult task, prepping and playing these bada** characters involves a tremendous amount of hard work. And wearing the superhero costumes is another task altogether. Some time ago, Evangeline Lily who was gearing up for her upcoming superhero flick Ant-man and The Wasp had a tough time donning her costume. Like her there are many such actors. Read on to know more...

1. Evangeline Lily

In her superhero flick, Ant-man and The Wasp, Lily who essayed the crimefighting Wasp, faced a food dilemma. No, she didn’t have to starve herself to fit into her tight-fitting leather suit. In fact, donning Wasp costume left the actress with a voracious appetite unable to eat food because it was super tight. “I like to eat, I’m a big eater; I eat all day and I eat big quantities,” the Lost star was quoted as saying. “I’m wearing a corset in that suit, and I now know why women didn’t use to eat (while wearing the undergarments). It’s so uncomfortable to eat in a corset! You have to take tiny, little delicate nibbles all the time which was (not me), no!”

2. Jennifer Lawrence

Before playing the Mockingjay Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games series, she essayed a young Mystique in X-Men: First Class and later carried forward her role in X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-men: Apocalypse. And playing the shape-shifting character wasn’t easy as it took hours getting prepped in the dressing room. For X-Men: First Class, Jennifer had to undergo seven hours of make-up to play Mystique. JLaw said she loved these movies except, “It’s just the (body) paint.”

Initially when she signed up for the role, she didn’t care about “Fumes and toxins. Now I’m almost 25, and I’m like, ‘I can’t even pronounce this, and that’s going in my nose? I’m breathing that?” Thankfully, by the time she was filming for Days of Future Past and Apocalypse, Jennifer’s make-up time was reduced to approximately three hours. She was able to wear a bodysuit instead of being covered fully in body paint.

3. Paul Bettany

Bettany who played Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron said of his superhero costume, “It’s pretty painful, it’s uncomfortable.” “You’re working in it for 10 hours and not really being able to hear well. There’s only (so) much  of your face open to the air,” he added. At the start it was alright but it  quickly grew annoying for Bettany. “The third day gets a bit tough. By the fourth and fifth day of the week, you are really having to meditate on the line of actors, thousands of them, who would love to be in your position. You have to concentrate on how lucky you are.” After all, that’s true!

4. Ben Affleck

Affleck made no bones about the fact that he was not happy wearing the Bat costume in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The iconic superhero costume, which is on the wishlist of countless fans, had the actor wishing otherwise. The hunk called it “the most humiliating, ridiculous thing in the world.” Affleck’s disdain for the costume was because it was really a motion capture suit that allowed for greater range of movement, and he nicknamed it, “visual effects pyjamas”. And no, wearing the Bat suit didn’t make Ben feel bada** like his character Batman.

5. Chadwick Bosman

When Bosman played Black Panther for the first time in Captain America: Civil War, he had to squeeze into the black cat costume in hot weather. Though he loved playing the superhero, filming certain parts were physically taxing. “You mean it’s going to cut off my air supply?” Chadwick referred to the general stunts in the movie which forced him to figure how to breathe properly.

The beefy actor described going into the mental “Zen space” while filming. The reason being, sweat would keep rolling down his body and he was unable to scratch the itchy feeling. The Vibranium claws didn’t help the Black Panther to relive his itch, tch tch!

6. Andrew Garfield

When Garfield played spidey in Amazing Superman, he had a tough time wearing his superhero costume as it was uncomfortable and unflattering. When he was playing Spiderman the first time, he felt his Spider Sense must have been tingling because he felt his pictures being taken of him wearing the costume. “I knew there were paparazzi taking terrible unflattering shots of my, you know, everything,” Andrew said.

7. Robert Downey Jr

Playing Iron Man and rocking the part catapulted Robert Downey Jr into an A-lister in Hollywood and made him a global star. Though he doesn’t particularly hate wearing the bada** superhero suit, the actor experienced the physical toll it can take on the one wearing it. “I’d been training all these years and thought I was pretty tough, but the first time I put on the Mark 1 suit, I almost had a personality meltdown,” said Downey Jr adding, “I’m not claustrophobic, but after moving around in it for a couple of hours, your spirit is kind of broken and you’re like, ‘Okay, time to bring in the stunt team.”

8. Scarlett Johansson

Playing the Black Widow added another feather to her repertoire. However, playing the female superhero left Johansson sweating in her boots. Speaking of when shooting for her first Avengers film, the sexy actress said, “It was so hot, I would wring out my socks at the end of the day.” Well, it sure sounds gross as her Black Widow suit was like a “wetsuit” in the hot weather. To top it off, Scarlett was unable to bear the heat which left her hallucinating for a while during a fight scene. Johansson compared her multiple costumes to “tyres” because doing stunts would get the suit worn out until she had to don a new one.

9. Mark Ruffalo

Though his character doesn’t require him to wear a suit, Mark Ruffalo didn’t have it easy playing the Hulk in the Avengers series. In reality, the actor has to wear a grey motion caption suit while playing the angsty superhero. Also, his face is covered in a bunch of dots, to aid CG effects, which the audience is unaware of. The actor said it felt nasty wearing the suit in hot temperatures and confessed it’s no fun wearing the tight outfit since he’s “not well-endowed and those suits don’t really show you off...” Also, Mark felt a little bit inferior standing alongside the rest of the cast when they were all dressed in their Avengers avatars.
