In a massive campaign to ensure a comfortable environment for Type1 diabetic students in schools, Type1 patients from Ahmedabad are going to reach out to major schools across the country, raising awareness among teachers. This campaign is the second phase of ‘D1iabesties’ (Diabesties), which was started by a 23-year-old Jazz Sethi, who was diagnosed with Type1 at the age of 13. She started this campaign with an aim to act as a support system, a lifestyle guide and a counsellor to help such patients and their family members and bust myths that surround the disease.

As part of the Diabetes campaign, the team in the second phase will reach out to major schools across the country to make the teachers aware of the symptoms to ensure a comfortable environment for such students in the class.

“Since Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed mostly in young children who are unable to open up to their teachers and suffer because their symptoms are often misinterpreted, we have decided to launch this campaign in schools, says Jazz.

When I was diagnosed, a lot of things changed for me in school. I used to get hypos (low sugar) in sports period and if my teachers had not known what to do, it could have resulted in medical emergencies. Recently, there was a case where a student was found sleeping in class as his sugar was high but the teacher scolded him and took him to the principal.”
