The healthcare industry dealing with elective surgeries has dried up a little bit since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Most people are hesitant to stepping into a hospital and undergoing surgeries at this time.

The pandemic has left a mark on how hospitals used to function and it will take long concentrated efforts to mitigate the effects. People understand the importance of surgeries for urgent cases, but they often fail to see the consequences of delaying elective surgeries.

Delaying surgeries can have real negative effects on the health of the patient. In a report published in NCBI, the World Health Organization has warned people against delaying or ignoring essential health services, including elective surgeries. A similar trend has been noticed in the case of the diagnostic evaluation of patients who need to undergo tests like anoscopies, colonoscopies, pap tests etc

One of the fastest-growing healthcare providers in Indian dealing with elective surgeries is Pristyn Care. Since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, Pristyn Care has seen different shifts and trends in people’s outlook towards elective surgeries. In the words of Dr. Vaibhav Kapoor, Co-founder of Pristyn Care, “We constantly strive not just to provide healthcare but also to make people aware about elective surgeries. If you are recommended to undergo surgery, it is only because the doctor believes it could work best in your interest. Ignoring it can have repercussions, often which will not be in your favor.

From emotional consequences to health complications, delaying surgery can do more harm than you can think of. Delaying surgeries can lead to:

  1. Worsening conditions:

Delaying surgical care for any disease can lead to worsening medical conditions. Initially, the problems may not seem like a big deal but gradually they can become life-threatening. For example, if you are diagnosed with a hernia that needs surgery but not necessarily a prompt surgery, delaying it for later can gradually lead the hernia to grow bigger and in a worse scenario cause strangulation and incarceration.

Delaying surgery is not advisable if you experience the following conditions:

  • internal bleeding
  • bone fractures
  • nervous damage
  • anorectal infections
  • difficulty breathing
  • venous disorders

These symptoms can indicate serious health issues and if the doctor suggests undergoing surgery, it should not be delayed.

  1. Increased emotional distress

The longer you delay the treatment, the more distressed you become. The thought and anticipation of an upcoming surgery can cause emotional anxiety in any patient. The anxiety impacts the mental health and overall wellbeing of the patient and creates problems for surgeons to monitor the disease symptoms accurately. The longer you delay the surgery, the severe could be the impact of the emotional distress.

  1. Broken healthcare and financial burden

The way to efficient healthcare goes through a continuous process. When the healthcare process meets with a lapse or a gap, the treatment often needs to be started from the ground level. When health conditions worsen, patients end up requiring temporary on an urgent basis which means more money needs to be spent. When you follow with the surgical treatment within the right time, you receive continuous management of healthcare and you end up saving money too.

  1. Need for emergency treatment

If you neglect surgery for disease in the initial stage, it can become much worse down the line and require emergency care. It is better to tackle a small health issue before it turns into a complex procedure. The operation that could have been done in a shorter time may not only get serious as time passes by but also costlier and need a longer recovery time.

In a recent interview with Fortune India, Harsimarbin Singh, Co-founder of Pristyn Care spoke about the need of getting elective surgeries done in time and how the company survived the pandemic hit prioritizing the safety of every patient.

“There were patients who feared to undergo the surgery during the pandemic and who could be asked to delay the surgery for some time. But then, there were also patients who actually needed care. There were people suffering from problems like blood loss due to anorectal health conditions. Constant blood loss can lead to a drop in your hemoglobin level and that needed to be taken care of. And there are more examples like that. So, not every surgery can be delayed. To ensure patient safety, we segregated our partner hospitals - those who attended to covid patients and those who did not attend to covid patients. We enabled the medical staff with everything that is needed to provide safe treatment to the patients. We launched online consultation so that people can discuss their problems with the doctors and surgeons from the comfort of their homes. We also brought in remote insurance clearance based on data analytics,” said Singh.

“Treatment for cardiac arrests, cancer, or any other serious health conditions are never delayed. We need to understand why elective surgeries should not be delayed either. Pristyn Care does surgeries and will continue doing that. What we have to learn from the pandemic is how we handle patients,” added Dr. GarimaSawhney, Co-founder of Pristyn Care.
