Niraj, 12, is on psychiatric treatment for the past three years. He was four when he saw his father being killed. As Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismail entered Thakur's hutment which is a make shift workers' quarters of state-run GT Hospital, Niraj went and hid inside the bathroom. "The armed men asked for water which Thakur promptly served them. Later, Niraj saw, from the slit of the bathroom door opening, his father being fired upon," said Karuna, 40.

Gradually, complaints of Niraj's misbehaviour started pouring in from school. The teachers told Karuna that he was different from other children. He was terribly restless and hot-headed. "He would walk around the class while it was in progress, without any fear. He would talk back to teachers," said Karuna.

Psychiatrists at GT Hospital have diagnosed him to be suffering from Hyperactivity.

"Niraj has been on pills to control his hyperactivity since three years now. I wonder for how long will the intake of drugs go on?," said Karuna.

Niraj is a student of seventh grade at DS High School in Sion. Karuna is worried about his dipping graph in academics. "He faces great difficulties in reading. All his scores were extremely low and even remedial classes were not helping," she said.

Niraj seethes with anger at the mention of any terrorist. Karuna recalls, "He says he will kill the terrorists who shot his father, if they happen to come in front of him. The incidence has aggravated bouts of violence inside him."

Niraj often remembers his father and breaks down. "He keeps chanting his father's name all the time. He finds semblance between his deceased father's and his uncle, and keeps reminding us of how similar they look," she said.

Doctors have advised Karuna to enroll Niraj in sports activities like playing football where he can sweat out his stress. Niraj's psychiatric issues have rubbed off on Karuna. She is also seeking psychiatric medication for depression since the last two years at GT Hospital.
