Heart-related ailments are increasing in India just like diabetes and cancer. Heart problems lead to multiple other problems just endangering the life of the patient. Heart-related disease is a progressive and chronic condition. Fatigue and breathlessness may be signals that your heart is not functioning as well as it should.

There is a general tendency for people to ignore heart failure symptoms and attribute them to just getting older or heartburn or acidity. In case of heart-related problems, the heart muscle becomes stiff wherein the heart is unable to pump blood properly. This limits the amount of oxygen and nutrients circulated to the vital organs of the body.

As per the International Congestive Heart Failure study, the mean age of heart failure patients in India is 59 years which is around 10 years younger than patients from western countries.

What leads to heart disease

Heart failure occurs when something damages the heart muscle or reduces the heart's ability to pump effectively.

Most often, the damage stems from coronary artery disease or heart attack.

But faulty heart valves, longstanding high blood pressure, or genetic disease may also be to blame.

The failing heart can no longer pump well enough to keep up with the body's demand for oxygen-rich blood.

Symptoms of heart disease

A general feeling of tiredness or fatigue sets in.

Become easily tired and short of breath while doing normal activities.

Fluid buildup in the lungs can result in coughing, wheezing, and breathing difficulty.

Fluid can collect in the ankles, legs, thighs and abdomen leading to rapid weight gain.

Breathing becomes harder when lying down because gravity allows fluid from below the lungs to travel up the torso.

How to keep heart healthy

Reduce salt intake

Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking

Maintain a healthy diet.
