Five pharmacy students of Gujarat Technological University have filed for patents of their herbal formulations developed as part of their coursework. These MPharm students belong to SJ Thakkar Pharmacy College, Rajkot. They are Bipin Patel, Bhavin Ramprasadi, Muneshvar Meghnathi, Ruchi Aghera and Jigar Savjiyani.

"All of them are herbal formulations and as compared to the drugs available in the market, they are highly effective in curing diseases," said Dr Manish Rachchh, principal of the college.
All the students have applied for patents through GTU's Innovation Council which was established in August 2010.

Said GTU vice-chancellor Dr Akshai Aggarwal: "This is only the beginning. I am expecting over 50 patent applications by next year. More so, by April 2012, we are planning to establish a 'GTU Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell' in the office of GTU's Board of Research and Development."
