FACT CHECK: Eating raw onions with rock salt can cure COVID-19? Know the truth

As the COVID-19 cases are surging, so are the words of advice. People everywhere are claiming to be experts in dealing with the Coronavirus infection and are offering free advice on social media, Whatsapp and messages. Home remedies and cures abound on social media at this time of the COVID19 pandemic. 

On such advice doing the rounds on social media is that eating onions with rock salt can cure COVID-19. However, there is no concrete evidence of this claim and the fact-check wing of the Press Information Bureau has said that this is a fake claim.

There is no scientific evidence or any study that shows that the coronavirus infection can be cured by eating raw onion with rock salt. Therefore, this is a false claim and such messages shouldn't be circulated.

Earlier in February, there were reports from London that a mother and her children, living in London, drank their own urine after receiving fraudulent information that it is a cure for coronavirus.

The Evening Standard reported that the mother received a WhatsApp forward by a friend informing her about the urine "cure". The video sent by her friend asked her to drink her own urine each morning.

The mother and her child drank urine for four days straight. 

Healthwatch Central West London, quoted by the Evening Standard, stated that the woman believed Covid vaccine had been compromised by Bill and Melinda Gates and was "dangerous" for her family.

The report further stated that conspiracies and fraudulent cures were a problem that needed to be "highlighted and addressed".   

"We were told of a stigma associated with contracting coronavirus, and also of the fake remedies and conspiracies shared via WhatsApp", the report read.
