Food that decreases inflammation

Turmeric, ginger and cinnamon are a few spices whose regular consumption helps decrease inflammation. They also help heal worn out tendons, hence, aids in quick recovery.

Food that increase calcium absorption

Being the core mineral, calcium is needed for bone strengthening. Certain foods increase the rate of calcium absorption in the body when eaten correctly. These foods, when consumed regularly, ensure that the calcium is deposited as bone mass and not as calcification in the joints or arteries. Soaked chia seeds, sesame seeds (til) with the fruit, green leafy vegetables with lemon squeeze, seasoned curd (see box) or buttermilk (chaas) are some of the ‘bioavailable’ calcium foods.

Food for the joints

Oil act as a lubricant by minimising the friction between the joints and thereby giving a relief in arthritis. Almonds, walnuts, flax seeds, olives, ghee, coconut milk etc. contain essential oils like omega 3 that help soothe aching joints in chronic arthritis.

Heat producing food

Arthritis is considered to be a ‘cold’ disease in Ayurveda and hence, food that produce metabolic heat and thermogenesis are a must. Ajwain, nachni (ragi), bajra, saunth water (see box), methi powder, green tea, chamomile tea are some of them.
