The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a study that revealed that people who are dining at a restaurant are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 than some other community activities.

In the study, the research team examined data from adults at 11 facilities across the nation who tested positive for COVID-19 and compared that with a control group of adults without COVID-19.

"We found that close contact with persons with known COVID-19 or going to locations that offer on-site eating and drinking options were associated with COVID-19 positivity," said the study researchers from the CDC.

"Adults with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results were approximately twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant than were those with negative SARS-CoV-2 test results," it added.

It was found out that participants with and without COVID-19 reported generally similar community exposures, with the only exception of people going to locations having eating and drinking options.

According to the data accumulated,  42 percent of the adults who tested positive reported having close contact with at least one person known to have COVID-19, compared with 14 percent of those who tested negative.

Therefore it was concluded by the study that eating and drinking at restaurants increases risk factors for contracting COVID-19.

Coronavirus has affected more than 29.6 million people with 9,36,000 deaths worldwide. The United States is the worst affected COVID-19 nation with 6.61 million people with 1,96,000 deaths.

With over 90,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count on Wednesday crossed the 50 lakh-mark, while the death toll has crossed the 82,000-mark as well.

At 9:30 AM on this day, the COVID-19 tally in the country has reached 50,20,360 cases, which include 9,95,933 active cases; 39,42,361 cured, discharged, or migrated patients, and 82,066 deaths.
