A 12-year-boy in Kerala's Kozhikode died on Sunday after he was admitted to a hospital with symptoms of Nipah virus infection with features of encephalitis and myocarditis. Kerala Health Minister Veena George informed that a 12-year-boy has died on the Nipah virus and left for Kozhikode to take stock of the situation.

"We have formed teams to handle the situation. Contact tracing and other measures have already been initiated. As of now, there is no need to panic, but we need to exercise caution," Veena George said.

The central government also confirmed that a case of the Nipah virus has been detected in Kozhikode, and rushed a team of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to Kerala.

The central team will provide technical assistance to the state.

The first case of the Nipah virus disease (NiV) outbreak was reported from Kerala's Kozhikode on May 19, 2018, and till June 1, 2018, the southern state had witnessed 17 deaths and 18 confirmed cases of the virus, which is spread by the saliva of the fruit bats.

After the recent case, the Central Government has advised some immediate public health measures, including search of active cases in the family, other families, villages, and areas with similar topography, like Malappuram.

The Kerala government held a high-level meeting of health officials on late Saturday night after the suspected Nipah infection, news agency PTI reported quoting a health department source.

The state government has not yet officially announced the presence of the Nipah virus, PTI reported quoting sources who said the health minister might rush to Kozhikode on Sunday morning to take stock of the situation.
