World Diabetes Day 2018: Foods to have and avoid to ensure a long hassle-free life

On World Diabetes Day, it has been noted that an estimated 8.7% diabetic population in the age group of 20 and 70 years live in India, according to the World Health Organisation.

The rising prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases is driven by a combination of factors - rapid urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, tobacco use, and increasing life expectancy.

However, there are several food items that an individual can have to prevent diabetes or control blood sugar levels at the onset of disease. Also given are a series of fods to AVOID.

You might think you think that the sugar content of fruit means that you can’t eat it. But, the sugar in fruit is natural, and is not this type of sugar we need to cut down on. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) advises that any fruit is fine to eat for a person with diabetes, so long as that person is not allergic to a particular fruit. The preparation of fruit, however, can affect blood sugar. Fresh or frozen fruits are better than processed fruits straight from a can or jar, such as applesauce and canned fruit. Processed fruits also include dried fruit and fruit juices. People with diabetes should eat processed foods sparingly or avoid them completely.

Seeds such as pumpkin seeds have been found to contain ingredients that have a blood glucose-lowering effect and eating these seeds may help people with diabetes to maintain their sugar levels. These seeds are rich in dietary fibre too, a factor that is believed to lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.
