After cancer, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is one of the biggest reasons for deaths across the globe. December 1 is observed as World AIDS day to raise awareness among people - on the causes, symptoms, prevention and cure of AIDS.

AIDS is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Women and men both are equally at risk of getting AIDS without proper care and precaution.

Dr. Archana Dhawan Bajaj, Gynecologists and Obstetrician and IVF Expert, Nurture IVF Centre shares, “Most people who get infected don’t even know. She also reveals the symptoms in women that might hint at HIV. Surprisingly, these symptoms are quite the common symptoms.

Swollen glands:

Lymph nodes are located in the human body, including the neck, back of the head, armpits, and groin. As HIV begins to spread, the immune system starts to weaken this result in enlarged lymph nodes, commonly known as swollen glands.

Infections:

HIV makes a barrier for the immune system to fight off germs, so it’s easier for opportunistic infections (OIs). People with HIV are also more prone to infections in particular areas like Skins, Eyes, Lungs and Kidneys etc.

Menstrual changes:

There is a change in the menstrual cycle of women experiencing HIV, they also have severe premenstrual symptoms.

Increased outbreaks of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs):

HIV worsen symptoms of other sexually transmitted infections. HIV can also cause more intense outbreaks in people with genital herpes. Their bodies may not respond to herpes treatment.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID):

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a disease of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. PID in HIV-positive women may be tough to treat. Symptoms may last longer than usual.

Meningitis:
