This film is an adaptation of B Ramamurthy’s big hit of the 1990s, Rani Maharani, which starred three big actors — Ambareesh, Malashree and Shashikumar.

This film, unfortunately, shows no such great combination. It looks like the makers wanted to completely capitalise on the popularity of leading lady Pooja Gandhi and that’s why have gone on to cast two absolute newcomers opposite her.

To further ensure some mileage, amongst the two roles Pooja plays, one role is of real actor Pooja Gandhi. While that seems to be the only innovation, the rest of the story remains similar.

Rani, the village belle, is the terrorising tomboy. Pooja, on the other hand, is the docile girl, who is bullied by her uncle and aunt. The two swap lives and there’s hullabaloo in their households.

While the story is nice in totality, it looks like a hasty effort. Scenes have major continuity issues. Take for instance, a scene where Pooja goes to eat in the bedroom because she doesn’t know how to savour a mudde, but the next shot is of her mother feeding her rice. This is just one of the many uncertainities.

In the acting department, Pooja seems to have the plum and does a good job. The two heroes remain mere props. Skip this one, opt for the DVD of the older version, we’d say.
