Whenever T Series and Bhushan Kumar want to play a cruel joke on the audience, they come up with films like Sanam Re and Love Games. While the former fried your brains with its sheer absurdity, their new release in association with Vishesh Films, takes the term 'wannabe cool' to a different level.
Love Games begins with young widow Ramona's (Patralekha) torrid affair with young industrialist Sameer (Gaurav Arora). To bring more 'adventure' into their lives, they start seducing married couples. During one such encounter, Sameer gets enamoured by Alisha (Tara Alisha Berry) who's a victim of an abusive marriage. But the game gets complicated when Sameer and Alisha actually fall in love but Ramona won't give up. And just when the audience is about to give up, the film escalates into a Kanti Shah version of How To Get Away With Murder.
In what is a pathetic attempt by T-Series and the Bhatts in the name of cinema, there is more unintended humour than actual drama. The only bright spot in this otherwise torturous feast is Tara Alisha Berry who rises way above the film. Here's a talent to watch for.
It's sad to see a director like Vikram Bhatt succumbing to subjects like these, which are now becoming a T-Series trademark. Making an erotic thriller is one thing; making an unreasonable B-grade flavoured flick quite another. The last 20 minutes of the film are phenomenally tacky; you stay glued to your seats only to find out how worse can it get.
All the characters are deliberately painted as flawed in an attempt to add layers but the manipulation shows. The sordid sensationalism in the screenplay is more amusing than shocking. The Bhatt brand of music is getting outdated by the minute - this one's a classic example. Worse is when you top it with lyrics like "Hello my friend, this is the end, ho jaa shuru." The makers desperately try to make the film 'cool' by adding English dialogues; irony is when Ramona says in classic Bhushan Kumar style: "I'm very bad at this Shakespeare type of English." The cast scales new heights in hamming with Patralekha leading the pack. Her dialogue delivery stays with you long after the film is over leaving you wondering if that was real or surreal. Hiten Tejwani comes a close second but he, at least, makes you fall off your seats in sheer disbelief.
Warning: If you love games, stay away. After watching this one, you wouldn't come close to even board games.
