Singer Matt Cardle, who won ITV's The X Factor talent show this year, held on to the top spot of the British pop charts for a second week on Sunday with his debut single, When We Collide.

The Official Charts Company, which compiles the weekly rundown, said the track sold 300,000 copies in its second week of release, taking the total to 740,000.

That makes it the second biggest selling single of 2010, behind Love the Way You Lie, by US rapper Eminem and Barbadian singer Rihanna.

Cardle, 27, a former painter and decorator from Essex, performed When We Collide during the X Factor final.

It is a renamed version of the song Many of Horror by the Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro which reached number eight in the UK charts earlier this year.

In second place in the final singles chart of 2010 was Rihanna with What's My Name.

US hip hop group Black Eyed Peas climbed one spot to third with The Time (Dirty Bit), while the highest new entry at number four was London singer Katy B with Lights On.

In a little-changed album chart, Take That held on to the top spot with Progress, having sold 430,000 copies last week to take their total close to the two million mark.
