Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde famously remarked, ‘I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.’ Actor Rajit Kapur seconds the thought. “We need to celebrate this live art form because it’s one of the few mediums of one-on-one communications with the audience,” he says.

To celebrate World Theatre Day on March 27, NCPA and theatre group Rage have joined hands for Drama Dhamaal, that brings theatrewallahs together for one night of celebration. More than 50 Mumbai theatre artistes, including Akarsh Khurana, Bhavna Pani, Danesh Irani, Dilshad Edibam, Faezeh Jalali, Gerson daCunha, Jim Sarbh, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Quasar Thakore Padamsee, Rahul DaCunha, Sonali Kulkarni and Zafar Karachiwala will present plays, monologues, songs, dance and stand up in Hindi, English, Marathi and Gujarati. “It’s a mix of those who have been doing theatre and since it’s important to pass on the baton to the next generation, students from The Drama School Mumbai will also be a part of it,” says Rajit, adding that the idea is to make it an enriching and fun show.

The event will also see the felicitation of some of the unsung heroes of theatre. “We are felicitating nine women, who have enriched Mumbai theatre with their creativity, energy and inputs,” informs Rajit.

Vijaya Mehta, Shanta Gokhale, Sulbha Arya, Nadira Babbar, Ruby Patel, Sarita Joshi, Dolly Thakore, Sabira Merchant and Rohini Hattangady are the stalwarts whose achievements will be celebrated this night.

While Drama Dhamaal is only for one night, Rajit believes that theatre should be celebrated every day, irrespective of things that remain the same and things that change. “We don’t have many spaces to perform which has not changed, but there are more younger people getting involved with theatre. When I was in my 20s, only people in their 30s-40s would come to watch plays and performances. That’s changed and it’s a good thing,” he says.

Drama Dhamaal will take place on March 27 at 7.30 pm, Tata Theatre, NCPA.
