Vishal Mishra has composed for films such as Munna Michael (Pyaar Ho), Qarib Qarib Singlle (Jaane De and Khatam Kahani) and Veere Di Wedding (Veere and Dagmag Dagmag) among others but he has always shared the credit with other musicians. However, with Pranutan Bahl and Zaheer Iqbal-starrer Notebook, he has created his first solo album. Vishal tells us he’s thankful to the producers — Salman Khan, Ashwin Varde and Murad Khetani — for letting him work on the complete sound of the movie, including the background score. “It’s a rarity these days as producers try to get music from four to five composers,” he says.

HUMANE AND ORGANIC

Since the day he read the script, Vishal knew its music was going to be  special. “The humaneness of all the songs comes from the story. You cannot replace the tale or put the tracks into another narrative — they are so integral to each other,” he describes the soundtrack. He worked with a crew of 200 musicians and travelled nearly 15,000 km. “Everything is live, organic and full of life.

We have used Kashmiri folk tunes, and traditional music is usually raw as well as imperfect, which people will relate to. It’s not a oundtrack but a page from the notebook of your heart,” says Vishal.

DEBUT SOLO PROJECT

Vishal doesn’t have anything against the trend of multiple musicians working on an album. However, he adds, “It’s a blessing for any creative person when he owns something. This is one project that I had ownership for. I feel like I’m in the story.” According to him, musicians express their own feelings through songs. “And as a solo composer, one gets the opportunity to touch human hearts in different ways and live various lives,” he explains. Currently, Vishal is working on a non-film single, in which he will also make an appearance. He also has songs coming up in four-odd Bollywood projects, including Jabariya Jodi and Street Dancer.
