Telangana Police books Ram Gopal Varma for upcoming film 'Murder'

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma was booked by Telangana police on Saturday in connection with his upcoming film Murder that is reportedly based on Pranay Kumar's murder in Nalgonda district, an alleged incident of honour killing. A case has been filed against Ram and producer Natti Karuna at Miryalaguda Town- I police station in Nalgonda district. The court issued the direction on a petition filed by P.Balaswamy, whose son Pranay Kumar was murdered in 2018 by his father-in-law Maruthi Rao who had refused to accept his marriage with his daughter.

The police said, "We have booked filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma following a court order for his upcoming movie Murder, which is based on sensational caste-based Pranay Kumar's murder that occurred in Miryalguda, Nalgonda District in September 2018," ANI reported. 

It was on June 21 that the filmmaker had released the poster of Murder, based on a true story. Police further said, "Pranay's father Balaswamy has filed a petition in Nalgonda Court stating that the film will affect the on-going trial of Pranay's murder case and the film should be stalled."

"We`ve registered a case under the relevant section of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act and taken up the investigation. The court has ordered Nalgonda police to register a case against the film director Ram Gopal Varma and the producer," the Police further added. 

Reports state, Pranay, a 24-year-old Dalit, was hacked to death by a hired killer in full public view when he along with his wife and mother were coming out of a private hospital in Miryalaguda on September 14, 2018. The sensational murder was caught on a CCTV camera.
